Technology Update: December 2021

What has been going on in technology?

December was another  short / quick month for us with winter break.  This month we focused on Coding / Computer Science.  To start off 1st-5th graders watched a video about how computer science is changing our worlds.  Then I introduced them to Code.org.  Code.org provides lessons appropriate for all ages - age appropriate courses are assigned to each grade level.  Computer science is not just about technology.  It focuses on problem solving, creativity, math, science, ELA and more! Check out this page for more information about the importance of computer science / coding.

When we come back in January, we will begin working on activities that focus on engineering and problem solving.

In this update:

Kindergarten

In kindergarten we continued to practice working on signing in and out of our Chromebooks.  We also practiced for the MAP testing that happened during the month of December. Students were also given some free choice of activities from their Google Classroom activities.  To wrap up December students were able to check out activities from Google’s Santa Tracker website.  This activity is always a hit.  There are 30 activities on the website for the students to check out (click the 3 lines in the top left corner to view them all).  Activities include coding, problem solving, art, music, and some that are just plain fun.

First and Second Grade

During December we focused on Coding.  The first week of December we were introduced to Code.org, and given a little time to try a few puzzles.  The following week students were given time to work their way through some of the activities presented in the coding course.
